Everything You Need to Know About Railroad Ballast

Size and Grading

Size

Type
Large angular crushed stone

The rough, open character of Railroad Ballast makes sense on Minnesota ground where clay can hold moisture and spring melt can soften a travel area. Its angular pieces make firm contact as a load is applied, while the spaces between them continue to carry water away. That behavior is helpful around lake cabin roads and other sites where drainage needs planning before placement begins.

Put Railroad Ballast in the foundation layer beneath rail track, a loaded pad, or a cabin approach, not where a smooth compacted finish is needed. On a lake lot, direct drainage away from the travel area before covering the stone course so meltwater does not remain against the base. For a finer layer that packs for the driving surface, use a finer base material above it. This keeps the ballast focused on support and free drainage through deep frost conditions.
