Materials Delivered Across Minnesota

Class 5 is the Minnesota base course.

It goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and garage bases and road base.

Class 2 is the 3/4 inch crushed surfacing class in the same spec, sold as Class 2 granite, buff limestone or red limestone. Driveway gravel tops an existing drive or finishes over a compacted base.

Class 5 and Driveway Gravel cover most drive work between them.

Clear rock is washed stone with the fines taken out. 3/4 Clear Rock handles drainage beds, drive surfacing, construction entrances and trench backfill, and as foundation rock it goes under basement slabs and footing drains.

Drainage Rock runs about 1 1/2 inch clear and suits French drains, drywells, footing drains and downspout runs. RipRap armours lakeshore, streambank, culvert outlets and slopes against ice, wave and spring runoff.

Granite Fines bed pavers, flagstone and patios, and compact into garden paths. 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel covers walkways, play areas and exposed aggregate work.

Sand and soil finish the job. Mason Sand serves brick, block and paver joints.

Washed Sand beds and levels under slabs and pavers.

Black dirt is what Minnesota calls topsoil, and it comes screened or pulverized for lawns and beds. Top Soil and Fill Dirt handle planting beds and bulk fill before a Class 5 course goes down.

Ground and Climate Across Minnesota

The building season runs from the spring thaw into late autumn. It is longest in the Twin Cities metro and Southeast Minnesota, and shortest in the Arrowhead and along the northern border.

Frozen ground stops compaction through the winter.

Spring load limits go up on Minnesota roads zone by zone from early March. They come off in April in the south and the metro, and as late as mid-May in the north.

Frost depth is set by county rather than statewide. The Minnesota Residential Code footing table calls for 5 feet in its 34 Zone I counties across the north, and 3 feet 6 inches in its 53 Zone II counties across the centre and south.

In Northwest Minnesota the flat bed of glacial Lake Agassiz left deep silt and clay, with sandy beach ridges marking the old shorelines. Lake clay runs as much as 150 feet thick along the northwestern border, and lake sediment is weak and frost susceptible.

The Arrowhead and North Central Minnesota sit on thin, stony till over Precambrian bedrock, with red sandy drift and broad peat basins. Outwash sand plains around Wadena, Park Rapids and Detroit Lakes are dependable sand and gravel ground.

Central Minnesota runs moraine and granite belt, with granite at or near the surface and worked quarries along the Mississippi and Sauk rivers at St. Cloud, Waite Park, Rockville and Cold Spring.

The Twin Cities metro holds several different grounds inside one short drive. Southwest and South Central Minnesota carry gray Des Moines lobe till under deep black prairie soil, and Southeast Minnesota is karst country where groundwater works limestone into sinkholes and springs.

Snowmelt is the heaviest water of the year statewide. Thawed ground sitting over a still-frozen layer is what floods yards and softens drives in spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Minnesota

What is the difference between crushed stone and Natural Pea Gravel?

Crushed stone has angular faces from a crusher, so it binds and compacts. Class 5 and Class 2 are crushed, and clear rock is crushed and washed. Natural Pea Gravel is round washed stone, sold here as pea rock or 3/8 inch natural pea gravel, and it stays loose, which suits walkways, play areas and exposed aggregate.

Should I order material by the ton or by the yard?

Both are accepted, and either works. Weigh the two options against how your supplier names the material: crushed rock and washed stone are usually ordered by the ton, while sand, black dirt, fill dirt and mulch are often ordered by the yard. Each product page has a calculator to size the load.

Which stone is best for drainage in Minnesota?

Clean washed stone drains, and Minnesota yards call it clear rock. Drain rock at about 1 1/2 inch clear suits French drains, drywells, footing drains and downspout runs. 3/4 inch clear rock covers drainage beds and trench backfill, and 3/8 inch crushed stone handles fine drainage and pipe bedding.
