Spring melt can expose weak planning around a lake lot or patio, particularly where clay holds water and frost moves the ground. Mason Sand is not the material for drainage planning or a supporting layer, but its smooth, consistent texture fits the visible work that follows. For visible work, the washed material provides a clean, smooth feel rather than the rougher feel associated with general construction sand.
Use Mason Sand as the leveling bed beneath pavers only after the base and drainage path are ready. It is also appropriate for workable mortar, stucco, and grouting. Keeping it near the surface helps a Minnesota project assign each layer its own job. The same material can be used in sand boxes and volleyball courts when a soft surface is preferred for regular use.

Common Uses
Mortar & Stucco Mixing
For masonry mixes, mason sand is used in mortar, stucco, and grout. Its evenly fine particles make a smooth mix that spreads consistently and bonds well.
Paver Installation
For interlocking pavers, spread mason sand for the final grade and brush it into the joints afterward. The fine sand seats between pavers and leaves a level bedding surface.
Sandboxes & Play Areas
Washed mason sand has a soft feel for sandboxes and play spaces. The washing removes sharp material and debris, leaving sand that is easier on bare hands and feet.
Volleyball Courts & Recreation
For volleyball court surfacing, mason sand meets the specifications for a soft, uniform area that is comfortable under bare feet and cushions impacts during play.
Why Choose Mason Sand
Ultra-Fine, Smooth Texture
Washed, finely graded mason sand has a smooth and even feel. It is suited to mortar mixes and finish work that call for a workable fine sand.
Washed Material
Washing removes clay, silt, and organic debris from mason sand. That helps keep mortar mixes clean and recreational surfaces free of those materials.
Even Grain Size
Mason sand is graded to a uniform size for mortar, leveling work, and recreation surfaces. The consistent material handles similarly from one use to the next.
Safe for Recreation
Mason sand works for sandboxes, play areas, and sports courts because it has a soft feel and is clean. It provides a comfortable surface for recreation.
