Everything You Need to Know About Crushed Concrete

Recycled crushed concrete

The light gray to off-white appearance of Crushed Concrete can show pebbles from the original concrete and occasional flecks of brick or asphalt. That makes it a practical underlayment rather than a decorative surface choice. On Minnesota lake cabin roads and other traffic areas, its value is in the dense base it forms beneath the wearing surface.

Clay soils and spring melt call for a drainage plan before material is placed, particularly where runoff could move toward a lake. Crushed Concrete contains angular recycled concrete pieces and fines that nest together under compaction, helping the base keep its shape under vehicles and equipment. Set the finished surface to shed water away from the drive, and use a separate surface material if a cleaner finished appearance is wanted.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Pad Base

For a new or rebuilt driveway or parking area, crushed concrete makes a useful base layer. Place and compact it in lifts to create support for traffic and help limit ruts and potholes. Leave it exposed for the driving surface, or cover it with driveway gravel for a neater look.

Private Roads & Site Access

For private roads, farm lanes, equipment areas, and jobsite entries, crushed concrete can serve as a base layer. It supports heavy trucks and equipment while creating a surface that remains usable in wet weather.

Patio, Walkway & Pad Sub-Base

Place compacted crushed concrete below pavers, paths, sheds, and hot tub pads to carry weight and support a flat finished surface. Its larger particles move water through more readily than Minnesota clay, helping limit water beneath the surface. Lay sand or screenings as a bedding layer before setting pavers.

Fill and Backfill

Use crushed concrete to raise low areas, build up grade, or backfill around footings and retaining walls. When compacted, its angular material forms a stable fill layer that is less prone to washing away or becoming muddy than soil fill.

Why Choose Crushed Concrete

Less Than Quarried Base

Because it is recycled rather than quarried, crushed concrete generally costs less per ton than crushed stone base. At every order size, it is priced below driveway gravel, which can make a noticeable difference for large driveways and access roads.

Dense, Interlocking Compaction

A plate compactor or roller presses the angular fragments and fines together. As it settles, remaining cement paste can help the material bind. This forms a dense base that helps resist ruts, movement, and washouts.

Recycled Material

Crushed concrete puts old concrete back into use instead of sending it to a landfill, while reducing demand for newly quarried stone. It still provides the support needed below a driveway or road.

Base Material and Fill in One

Use crushed concrete below driveways and parking pads, on access roads, under patios and sheds, or as general fill. A single delivery can supply much of the initial ground preparation for a project.
